Coach O, documented his life experiences and subsequently published his first book “More Than Just Basketball,” It is written simply and directly in his down-to-earth way in his experience with sports.
After successfully earning the seven championship game rules of basketball, his philosophy in life is, when adversity surfaces, what lessons do you take from it, and like basketball can you rebound?
Through Coach O’s involvement with schools, sports and community youth groups, some of his basketball accomplishments are: 8 state tournament districts titles; 3 regional titles; 3 quarterfinal titles; 3 semifinals; 3 state championship titles as head coach Assistant on the team that won the state championship in 1992.
Awarded by BCAM (Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan), 300 victory club in 2012, in 1999 Named Metropolitan Coach of the year by the Detroit Free Press and earned coach of the year in the Detroit Catholic League, A-B division in 1995, 1996 and 1998. Coach Owens has coached 17 students who went on to earned their college degrees as well as captains of their basketball teams.
